Funding for Deer Island Basin in Marin and Sacred Spaces in Oakland

Today, the Governing Board of the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority approved funding for two projects, including one Community Grant.

The projects are:

  • A grant of $2,423,000 to Marin County Flood Control District for the Deer Island Tidal Basin Wetlands Restoration Project: Phase 1 Construction, consisting of restoring 71.1 acres of tidal baylands; enhancing flood protection measures along 9,600 linear feet of existing levees, including the creation of 5,500 linear feet of ecotone slopes along the levees and raising of 2,800 linear feet of levee; and conducting three years of post-construction monitoring and adaptive management.

  • A grant of $200,000 to Coastal Quest, fiscal sponsor for Ninth Root, for the Sacred Spaces Planning Project, consisting of collecting planning data, holding community engagement workshops, and creating plans for habitat and public access enhancements along the Damon Marsh Trail, including a series of climate-resilient and culturally relevant wellness zones at Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline. The project will include: conducting a site assessment; conducting community engagement; creating plans for erosion control, invasive species removal, native planting, interpretive art, and site monitoring; and creating conceptual designs for habitat and public access enhancements along the Damon Marsh Trail. This planning project will result in 30% designs and plans for habitat enhancement and a series of five climate-resilient and culturally relevant wellness zones along the Damon Marsh Trail at Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline in East Oakland.
